Introduction

Welcome to the Mathematics Department. Within this page, you will get a chance to see life within the Department at Bloomfield Collegiate School. Not only is Mathematics important in the life of the school, but also in the life of your daughter. The Department is well equipped with four full time dedicated teachers of Mathematics.

The aims of the Department are

  • to monitor the progress of each pupil closely to make sure they reach their true full potential within the subject of Mathematics;
  • to have good communication between your daughter, yourself and the classroom teacher and
  • to use a wide variety of teaching methods to deliver the full curriculum.

Your daughter will enter Year 8 and have 5 periods of Mathematics a week in which they will consolidate and extend their knowledge of numbers, algebra, geometry, measure and handling data. Along with this, your daughter will gain experience of how mathematics comes into everyday living, through dealing with shopping for the best offer, household bills, salary payslips and tax. Your daughter will get the opportunity to work on their own, in teams, make classroom presentations of their work and make use of the latest technology.

Your daughter’s progress will be monitored through end of topic tests, Christmas and Summer examinations. Any extra support will be provided through your daughter’s classroom teacher, our excellent Peer Tutoring programme and our extensive MS Teams and OneNote areas.Your daughter will continue to study Mathematics through Years 8 to 12. At GCSE level (Years 11 & 12), we study the Northern Ireland curriculum as given by CCEA and your daughter may have the opportunity to study Further Mathematics at GCSE.

At A-Level, we study the Northern Ireland curriculum as given by CCEA and your daughter may choose to take Mathematics to AS and A2 level, while also having the opportunity to choose Further Mathematics to AS and A2 level.

We encourage all our pupils to enjoy their mathematics learning and through our careers support and advice, your daughter may even take up a career in mathematics.

We encourage you to come along and view our department in action at our School’s Open night or alternatively contact the school for any further information.
