Edina the German Spelling Bee

NICILT Competition

Edina Longridge took part in the annual NICILT German Spelling Bee Competition on behalf of our school. Against very stiff competition, Edina managed to gain third place, spelling an amazing number of German words in one minute using the German alphabet. Tolle Arbeit, Edina!

Year 9 pupils were invited to submit entries for the NICILT Poster Competition. Ten entries went forward from BCS which showed a range of creative responses to the questions “Why are language skills important in the Global Workplace?” and “Why pick a language for GCSE/A-Level?” All entrants received a certificate, which was presented in assembly, and Hula El Kashif won a special commendation from NICILT for her creative design. She attended a ceremony in the Brian Friel Theatre at Queen’s University, Belfast.

Edina Longridge, Raniya Hamid, Minna Abdelhadi and Sophie Close all submitted entries for the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators in German. Over 15,000 students took part in the competition task and a team of 36 judges then assessed 3,500 entries to the competition. Across the six strands of the competition running this year, the judges selected 24 UK-wide winners, 20 UK-wide runners-up, 189 area winners and 215 commended entries.

We were delighted to discover that Raniya’s translation of a German text was selected as a winner in the area round and was then put forward for the UK-wide competition. In July 2023, we found out that Raniya had been selected as a runner-up in the UK-wide competition. We are very proud of Raniya’s impressive translation skills. Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Raniya!
