Year 10 visited the Somme Heritage Centre just outside Newtownards. The visit is an integral part of the Great War Unit of the Year 10 History course.
During a busy schedule pupils had the opportunity of hearing a range of unique personal accounts of local men and women involved in World War One both from those at the Western and Home Fronts. Other highlights included an interactive weapons demonstration, an appointment at a Recruitment Office and an eerie walk through an authentic (and very cold) Trench.
The Centre focuses mainly on commemorating the contribution of the Irish Regiments to the War and in particular the local connection to the Battle of the Somme.
Our visit this year was all the more poignant as it coincided with the 100th anniversary of the conclusion of the Somme Offensive in November 1916.
Our thanks to all the staff at the Somme Heritage Centre.
