Disability Awareness Workshop

Bloomfield is incredibly proud of its link with KIC (Kids in Control). KIC is a professional theatre company that values children and young people of all abilities and backgrounds without discrimination, recourse to selection procedures or, worst of all, auditions.

Recently, Year 11 pupils had the opportunity to participate in ‘Disability Awareness’ workshops led by Linda Fearon. Linda has received an Individual Artist Award from Arts Council NI to create drama workshops that she can deliver to schools. Year 11 pupils loved the activities, challenges and opportunities to express themselves creatively.

KIC and Bloomfield’s association goes beyond one-off workshops. Annually, Year 11 pupils volunteer to star in a stunning production in the Lyric Theatre, Belfast, alongside young people from other schools and KIC members. Bloomfield pupils play key roles in creating the performance: production, acting, dancing and, more importantly, supporting and guiding young people with disabilities in the performance. This year’s Lyric performance was absolutely outstanding and we, as a school, are immensely proud of our Year 11 girls.

Year 10 pupils are introduced to the fantastic KIC Project in June of each school year. These taster workshops, led by KIC’s artistic director, David Calvert, are always exciting, energetic, dynamic and filled with laughter. These introductory workshops always whet the appetite of the pupils to get involved with the Lyric programme in Year 11.

Bloomfield and KIC have a wonderful partnership and long may it continue.
