Festival of Nine Lessons

The enchanting ambiance of the holiday season was beautifully captured at our school’s Nine Lessons and Carols Carol Service, where the air was filled with the resonant voices of our talented choirs, each rendering timeless carols and hymns that stirred the hearts of all in attendance.

The evening commenced with the Senior Choir’s rendition of Benjamin Britten’s ‘This Little Babe’, setting the tone for a night of musical splendour. The Junior Choir followed led by Mrs Stevenson, enveloping the audience in a warm embrace with their heartfelt performance of ‘Light of the World’ by Lauren Daigle, infusing the service with a sense of joy and hope.

The delicate and intricate harmonies of the Chamber Choir’s rendition of ‘Gaudete’ added an ethereal touch to the service, creating an atmosphere of reverence and tranquillity. The Senior Choir’s rendition of Bob Chilcott’s ‘Midwinter’ was a poignant and soul-stirring ode to the season, evoking a sense of wistful contemplation among the listeners.

The combined voices of our dedicated Staff Choir, led by Mrs Henderson, resonated with heartfelt sincerity as they performed ‘Christmas Grace’, lending a personal touch to the evening’s proceedings. A trio of singers, Annabelle Burton, Storm Dougherty and Nicole Craigan, delivered a contemporary rendition of ‘Away in a Manger’. This version was composed and arranged by our own peripatetic piano tutor, Mr Day. The Senior Choir’s annual rendition of ‘O Holy Night’ soared with powerful emotion, filling the space with a sense of reverence and awe. One of the verses was sung beautifully by three senior soloists, Rachel Smith, Rose Hamilton, and Sarah Ewart. In a change from tradition, the Junior Choir read the seventh lesson leading into the energetic performance of ‘What a Glorious Night’ which uplifted the spirits of the audience. There was an overwhelming feeling of emotion as the choir performed part of this piece using Makaton to ensure that everyone felt included.

The evening culminated in a grand climax of voices, as the Staff, Senior, Chamber, and Junior Choirs united to deliver an awe-inspiring performance of ‘Total Praise’, enveloping the congregation in an uplifting chorus of unity and faith.

The Nine Lessons and Carols Carol Service served as a poignant reminder of the true spirit of the holiday season, inspiring all to reflect on the themes of love, peace, and unity that define this special time of year. The dedication and talent displayed by our students and staff truly illuminated the beauty of the season, leaving a lasting impression.

My thanks go to Mrs Stevenson, Mrs Henderson, Mrs Cruise, and Dr. McKee for their contributions to a wonderful evening.
