Women’s Public Speaking Competition

Public Speaking

On Tuesday 7th February a team consisting of Steffi M, Amy-Jane W and Olivia P, competed in the 2017 QWG Irish Federation of University Women’s Public Speaking Competition.

Held in the Canada Room at the Queen’s University Belfast, the girls were incredibly excited to compete after weeks of preparation. With Miss Murray’s advice ringing in their ears, the girls had thirty minutes to prepare an unknown aspect of their chosen topic. Being drawn as the fifth team to compete, a nervous wait ensued watching some excellent speakers from other schools perform to a high standard.  Olivia was up first, delivering an impassioned speech on ‘Live to work, or work to live’.  Steffi engaged the audience with a witty look at ‘Talking is better than texting’, and AJ eloquently discussed the topic of ‘I can tell my pet anything’. When all the schools had competed, a tense wait followed as the judges made their decision. The girls were absolutely delighted to be placed as the runners-up, a more than worthy achievement for their brilliance. With this being the girls’ first experience of a public speaking competition, their accomplishment is all the more impressive. Well done!
