This term there have been a number of events in the library. Bookbuzz is an annual event to encourage reading for pleasure amongst Years 8 & 9. It is a charity initiative of Booktrust, which takes seriously the importance that reading for pleasure has on development and seeks to bring a wide range of the best written and most popular reads available to suit all reading levels.
This year there are titles ranging from ‘The Wickford Doom’, a ghost story set during World War 2; ‘Wonder’, the beautifully written and inspirational story about a young boy’s efforts to fit in; to the most popular book chosen by Bloomfield girls which was ‘Girl on a Plane’, a gripping thriller set on a hijacked plane in the 1970s.
We also brought a team from Bloomfield to Wellington College in November to take part in the annual Kids Lit Quiz, an international quiz designed both to acknowledge and encourage reading for pleasure. In a very wide-ranging and enjoyable quiz, the Bloomfield team performed extremely well, winning one of the rounds and coming 6th place overall, which was very commendable.
Many girls have also taken part in a Christmas raffle, where they have had the opportunity to pick books ranging from ‘Hetty Feather’s Christmas’ by Jacqueline Wilson, to the new David Walliams book ‘Bad Dad’ to the currently popular ‘Everything, Everything’ by Nicola Yoon.
We held a Roald Dahl afternoon for Year 8 this term, during which they made revolting recipes, had readings from his books, took a quiz and made craft activities. There were some great costumes and it was a fun afternoon!”
