We are excited to be able to say that Bloomfield Collegiate is now a ‘FairAware’ School.
This means we have taken the first of 3 steps necessary to become a Fairtrade school. Thanks to all the hard work and enthusiasm from Mrs Wilson, Miss Johnston and the Year 13 Geography class. They organised a school assembly during Fairtrade fortnight. This year, Fairtrade are focusing particularly on the plight of banana farmers who work hard to feed us all but receive little reward for their work once the big banana sellers have taken their cut. Fairtrade guarantees the farmers a living wage – so the school has been festooned with bananas to remind us of this. A banana-based cake sale was also organised. (Fairtrade) chocolate banana brownies seemed to be the most popular delicacies!
Altogether £180.00 was raised to support the work of the Fairtrade charity. We have lots of ideas for the next stage in the process – so, watch this space…..!
